Maria Kealy ‘27, a Division I women’s basketball player, enrolled in HSC 280: Adaptive Sports and Recreation during the spring of her first year at Quinnipiac. Now as a senior health sciences major, Kealy still thinks back to one of the courses that transformed her understanding of athletics.

Growing up in Donegal, Ireland, Kealy played a range of sports, including soccer, Gaelic football, hurling and basketball. Basketball quickly became Kealy’s primary focus, and she has proudly represented Ireland at the U16, U18, U20 and U23 levels, including at the European Championships.

“Studying and playing basketball in another country has challenged me to grow in confidence, build resilience and a sense of independence,” she said. “I am grateful for the coaches, teammates, professors and friends who have supported me throughout my Quinnipiac experience."

Kealy played a key role in the Quinnipiac women’s basketball program’s 2025-2026 regular-season conference victory. She also earned the MAAC All-Academic Team recognition in both 2025 and 2026.

“Playing Division I basketball has given me a deep appreciation for the role that sport and physical activity play in my daily life,” she said. “It has taught me the value of preparation, resilience, communication and trust between athletes and coaches.”

With this experience, Kealy attended the adaptive sports and recreation class with an open mind and an eagerness to learn.

“Before taking HSC 280, I had limited experience with adaptive sports. As an athlete, however, I strongly believe that everyone deserves the opportunity to enjoy an active and healthy lifestyle,” Kealy said. “I chose to take this class to develop my understanding of adaptive sports and to learn how small, thoughtful changes can make sport more accessible and inclusive.”

As part of the curriculum, students are required to complete at least 15 hours of service-learning. Elizabeth Wescott, clinical associate professor of occupational therapy, has taught several sections of adaptive sports over the years and helps connect students with organizations to obtain hands-on learning experiences.

Specifically, the organizations that Kealy volunteered at, Gaylord Sports Assocation (GSA) Exercise for Life and Miracle Leave of CT (MLCT) have been great partners for Quinnipiac and our students.

“GSA and MLCT have been exceptional community partners for our course and consistently compliment the caliber of student volunteers who attend events and programming,” said Wescott.

Kealy said that this experiential learning opportunity was one of the most eye-opening experiences of the course.

“The Adaptive Sports and Recreation class expanded my understanding of the barriers that can affect a person’s participation in sport and daily physical activity,” she said. “This experience showed me that inclusion does not always require major changes. Small, thoughtful adjustments and a supportive environment can make physical activity more accessible and allow people of all abilities to experience its physical, mental and social benefits.

Specifically, Kealy was able to connect her athletic experience to the concepts and ideas explored in the class.

“My background as a Division I athlete has helped me approach learning about adaptive sports with curiosity, openness and respect,” she said. “I strongly believe that everyone should have equal opportunities to exercise, participate in sport and experience the benefits of an active lifestyle. Through this class, I have developed a greater appreciation for the dedication and skill involved in adaptive sports.”

According to Wescott, Kealy’s strengths and assets also supported class dialogue and discussions.

"Maria brought a level of achievement, discipline and goal-directed focus that enriched the academic environment while also providing a positive example for peers,” said Wescott. “Her ability to balance a rigorous athletic commitment and academic responsibilities demonstrates exceptional time-management and a commitment to excellence. Her unique perspective enriched conversation within the classroom setting.”

Kealy recommends the course to any student interested in learning more about accessibility or athletics from a different perspective.

“Taking HSC 280 as a freshman gave me an early opportunity to learn more about adaptive sports, inclusion and accessibility. I appreciated the knowledge and practical experience that Elizabeth Wescott brought to the class. The course has positively influenced how I think about equality and inclusion in sport, and I would recommend it to students across any academic discipline.”

Kealy continued her involvement with adaptive sports years after her first introduction to the topic. This summer, she had the opportunity to support Quinnipiac’s Camp No Limits program, a summer camp for individuals with limb loss or limb difference, alongside her basketball teammates.

“It was a rewarding experience to connect with children who brought so much enthusiasm and excitement to playing basketball,” said Kealy. “I was grateful to draw on what I had learned in HSC 280, particularly the importance of listening, encouraging participation and creating an environment that is supportive, inclusive and fun for everyone.”

Beyond her involvement with adaptive sports, Kealy said she will always treasure the memories she has made at Quinnipiac, both on and off the court.

“Spending so much time training, competing and supporting one another has created strong friendships and memories that I will always value,” she said about her basketball teammates. “Off the court, I have enjoyed exploring new opportunities, meeting people from different backgrounds and experiencing university life in another country. The friendships and experiences I have gained have made Quinnipiac feel like a second home.”
