"I've always been drawn to healthcare," Carreira said. "From a young age, I was fascinated by medicine, physicians, nurses and the overall healthcare environment."
Although Carreira knew he wanted to make a meaningful impact in healthcare, he quickly recognized that his strengths aligned more closely with leadership, business strategy and organizational development. This realization ultimately influenced his decision to pursue Quinnipiac's health science studies program, where he could explore different areas of the industry without committing to a clinical career.
"The health science studies program offered a well-rounded understanding of healthcare from both clinical and business perspectives, allowing me to gain exposure to multiple facets of the industry," Carreira said.
Throughout his time at Quinnipiac, Carreira developed the critical-thinking, communication and problem-solving skills that would later become essential to his professional success.
"I had professors who challenged me to think deeper and elevate my standards," Carreira said. "At the time, those expectations were not always easy, but today they are some of the experiences I appreciate most."
Beyond academics, Quinnipiac provided Carreira with opportunities that helped shape his professional direction.
During his senior year, his academic adviser connected him with an internship working for the CEO of a multi-site ophthalmology and surgery practice in Hamden, Connecticut. The opportunity introduced him to the administrative side of healthcare and eventually developed into his first professional role.
"What began as an internship evolved into my first professional role in healthcare business development and human resources, where I worked closely with executive and physician leadership," Carreira said. "It provided invaluable exposure to the operational, financial and strategic aspects of running a successful healthcare organization and confirmed that healthcare administration was the path I wanted to pursue."
Following graduation, Carreira earned his Master of Healthcare Administration degree and continued advancing through various leadership positions. One of the most significant milestones in his career was serving as chief administrative officer for a pediatric medical group, where he helped drive financial growth, operational improvements and business expansion. However, stepping into executive leadership at a young age also presented challenges.
"Early in my career, I found myself helping lead a multi-million dollar healthcare organization with managers, staff and physicians who often had decades more experience than I did," Carreira said. "That experience taught me very quickly that leadership is not about age or title. It is about building trust, listening and communicating effectively, and consistently delivering results."
Rather than allowing skepticism about his experience to discourage him, Carreira used these challenges as opportunities to strengthen his leadership abilities. He learned the importance of transparency, accountability and developing relationships with individuals from different professional backgrounds. Such experiences ultimately helped prepare him for his next major career milestone: launching his own consulting firm.
"Launching MRC Health Consultants allowed me to take the lessons I had learned throughout my career and apply them across multiple organizations instead of just one," Carreira said.
After more than 14 years of experience in healthcare leadership, Carreira recognized that many organizations faced similar financial, operational and strategic challenges.
He founded MRC Health Consultants to provide healthcare organizations with executive leadership and practical solutions to overcome these obstacles. The firm works with physician practices, healthcare entrepreneurs and executive leaders nationwide.
"Our mission is simple: to help healthcare organizations strengthen operations, improve financial performance and achieve sustainable growth so providers can focus on what matters most, delivering exceptional patient care," Carreira said.
MRC Health Consultants specializes in fractional executive leadership, strategic consulting and performance improvement initiatives.
Through fractional CEO, COO and CFO services, the firm helps organizations improve workflows, increase profitability, develop leadership teams and plan for long-term growth. Its work also includes supporting practices looking to expand locations, increase provider capacity, strengthen employee engagement or prepare for acquisition.
The firm additionally works with a national network of partners specializing in marketing, finance, cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, human resources, legal compliance and other business functions. These services allow healthcare professionals to focus more on patient care while receiving guidance on the increasingly complex responsibilities of managing a healthcare organization.
"What makes our approach unique is that we do more than provide recommendations," Carreira said. "We work alongside our clients to implement solutions, create accountability and drive measurable results."
For Carreira, founding MRC Health Consultants represents one of his proudest professional accomplishments.
Building a business from the ground up has allowed him to combine his interests in healthcare, entrepreneurship and leadership while helping organizations better serve their communities. The firm's work and client success stories are highlighted on its case studies page.
"Today, what makes me most proud is seeing the positive results our clients achieve and knowing that the lessons I have learned throughout my career are helping healthcare organizations better serve their communities," Carreira said.
Reflecting on his professional journey, Carreira believes that success in healthcare leadership requires more than technical expertise. He emphasizes the importance of understanding how people, operations and financial performance work together to influence organizational success.
For students hoping to enter healthcare administration or consulting, he encourages developing both interpersonal and analytical skills.
"Adaptability, communication, problem-solving, financial literacy and emotional intelligence are all critical skills for anyone pursuing healthcare leadership, consulting, management or executive roles," Carreira said.
Carreira also encourages health science studies students to explore the wide range of opportunities available outside traditional clinical professions.
He recommends shadowing professionals across different specialties, including physicians, healthcare executives, consultants, marketers, financial professionals, IT specialists and human resources leaders. Gaining exposure to these careers can help students identify their interests while building valuable professional connections.
"Healthcare needs talented professionals in every area — not just clinical roles," Carreira said. "The right career path is often discovered through exposure, mentorship and experience."
Carreira's own professional journey demonstrates how unexpected opportunities can lead to meaningful career development.
From his senior-year internship to eventually establishing a national consulting firm, he credits his willingness to embrace unfamiliar experiences and learn from others. He encourages students to remain proactive, seek mentorship and avoid placing unnecessary pressure on themselves to have their entire futures planned out.
"Don't feel obligated to have your entire career figured out immediately," Carreira said. "Be intentional, stay proactive, and focus on continuous learning and growth."
As his career continues to evolve, Carreira has developed an even greater appreciation for the education and mentorship he received at Quinnipiac. He remains passionate about sharing his experiences with students who may be uncertain about their professional direction, particularly those interested in healthcare but hesitant to pursue a clinical occupation.
"If my journey can help students better understand the many opportunities available in healthcare and encourage them to pursue their goals with confidence, then I am always happy to give back to the Quinnipiac community that played such an important role in my development," Carreira said.
Whether students are interested in patient care, administration, finance, technology or entrepreneurship, Carreira hopes his story demonstrates the many ways they can make a difference in healthcare.
His journey serves as a reminder that professional success does not always follow a predetermined path and that remaining curious, adaptable and open to new opportunities can lead to unexpected and rewarding careers.
