Getting involved: 10 student-led organizations to consider

Students talk at a fair table outside on the quad

At the September 3 Engagement Fair, students had the opportunity to explore over dozens of different clubs and organizations. Here are some unique options you may have missed.

While some students may gravitate toward organizations related to their academics or future careers, others may be looking for a creative outlet, a new hobby or simply a way to try something different. No matter the interest, getting involved offers students a chance to meet new people, explore opportunities outside the classroom and find a greater sense of connection within the university community. With so many ways to get involved, here are 10 student-led organizations worth checking out this semester.

1. American Sign Language Club

Want to learn a new language while connecting with other students? The American Sign Language Club welcomes everyone from experienced signers to students who have never signed before. Each weekly meeting focuses on a different theme, such as food, animals or school, with members learning around 30 new signs before putting them into practice through an activity. The club also introduces members to sentence structure and Deaf culture, making it an opportunity to learn more than just vocabulary. No previous ASL experience is necessary, so it is an easy way to step outside your comfort zone and develop a new skill.

2. Avian Ecology Club

Grab your binoculars and keep an eye on the trees because the Avian Ecology Club gives students the chance to explore the wildlife surrounding Quinnipiac. Centered around bird-watching, conservation and environmental education, the organization connects students with local nature while encouraging environmental stewardship. Guided walks, habitat projects, advocacy and citizen science give members opportunities to learn about biodiversity while spending some time outside. Whether you can identify a bird by its call or cannot tell a robin from a sparrow, there is room to get involved.

3. Cheese Club

Yes, Quinnipiac has a Cheese Club. For students who believe everything is better with cheese, this might be the organization for you. The club offers a fun and relaxed environment centered around a food that comes in seemingly endless varieties. It is also proof that joining an organization does not always have to be about adding another responsibility to your schedule. Sometimes, bonding with other students over a shared interest is the best way to find your community.

4. Comic Sans Improv Troupe

No scripts, no memorizing lines and no knowing what is going to happen next. Comic Sans Improv Troupe gives students the opportunity to explore improvisational comedy and think on their feet. Improv provides a creative outlet while helping students develop confidence, quick thinking and communication skills. Whether you love performing in front of a crowd or just want to try something completely different, Comic Sans offers a chance to embrace spontaneity and have a few laughs along the way.

5. Crafting at QU

Put down the laptop for a little while and make something with your hands. Crafting at QU gives students a creative break from papers, exams and everything else packed into a college schedule. Whether you are already the crafty type or your artistic abilities usually stop at stick figures, this organization provides a space to create, socialize and unwind. You might even leave a meeting with something new to decorate your room.

6. Fishing Club

Sometimes, getting involved means getting away from the busyness of campus for a bit. The Fishing Club brings together students interested in fishing and the outdoors, regardless of their level of experience. It is an opportunity to meet people with similar interests, spend some time outside and enjoy a hobby that you might not normally associate with college life. Experienced anglers and complete beginners alike can find a place in the Fishing Club.

7. Lightsaber Club

Why settle for watching a lightsaber duel when you can participate in one yourself? Quinnipiac's Lightsaber Club brings together Star Wars fans and anyone else interested. Members duel one another using lightsabers and other training equipment in a casual environment focused on having fun. You do not need to know every piece of Star Wars lore to join, either. If swinging a lightsaber around sounds entertaining, that is enough.

8. Quinnipiac Bodybuilding Club

For students interested in fitness and strength training, the Quinnipiac Bodybuilding Club provides another way to connect with people who share those interests. The organization brings together students interested in bodybuilding, training and the fitness community. Whether you have years of experience in the gym or are simply interested in learning more, the club offers a community centered around encouraging one another and sharing a common passion for fitness.

9. Quinnipiac Paw Pals

Animal lovers, this one is for you. Quinnipiac Paw Pals combines a love for animals with community service by advocating for animal welfare and the connection between humans and animals. The organization hosts fundraisers benefiting local shelters, holds informational events and creates opportunities for students to spend time with animals. Paw Pals gives students a chance to make an impact beyond campus while connecting with others who share a soft spot for four-legged friends.

10. The Pizza Project

Pizza and meaningful conversations might be an unexpected combination, but that is exactly what makes The Pizza Project stand out. The student-run organization works to break the stigma surrounding mental health by creating opportunities for community and conversation. Its mission centers around bringing people together in a welcoming environment where students can connect with one another, all while sharing a slice. The Pizza Project shows that conversations about mental health do not always have to feel intimidating or formal.
