The four-person band performed in the Mount Carmel Dining Hall on September 15.

“I think Hispanic Heritage Month is an important opportunity to recognize and celebrate the history, cultures and contributions of Hispanic and Latino communities,” said Lexi Pepe, unit marketing manager at Quinnipiac Dining. “It also allows students to learn about cultures and traditions they may not have experienced before.”

Food is such an important part of culture and can be a great way to bring people together, Pepe added.

“I hope students will see how much the university that they chose to attend cares about honoring diverse cultures — and how much beauty there is in the mosaic that is our world,” said Aileen Dever, chair and professor of modern languages.

The mariachi band was important way to kick off the heritage month, she added.

“They are a vibrant symbol of Hispanic culture through music and performance and also represent the importance that Hispanics themselves give to building and fostering community,” said Dever, who organized the event.

Students and faculty expressed their appreciation for the event, and the opportunity to enjoy live music during lunch.

“It’s amazing that they do this. As a Hispanic, it’s very good that they are showing representation and honoring Hispanic heritage,” said Kate Negrete ’30.
