Alana Sawyer ‘27, JD ‘30, a third-year student in the accelerated dual-degree BA/JD 3+3 law program, emphasized the importance of maintaining balance alongside her busy schedule. In addition to her coursework, Sawyer is an active member of the Alpha Chi Omega sorority as well as the women’s volleyball club team.
“I make sure to take time for myself and talk to my friends or professors,” she said.”If I feel too overwhelmed, I put a lot into studying and ensuring my work is done to the best of my ability, but I do not forget to take a break.”
She also shared that her “favorite study spot is the study rooms in the School of Business,” because she can “get a snack from the cafe and a fun drink” while she focuses on studying.
Sawyer also shared advice for first-year students with upcoming exams.
“During midterms, everything feels super urgent and you may feel incredibly overwhelmed, but if you just take a deep breath and take a step back, it will give you a moment to relax. By doing this, you are able to create a plan and realize that everything is possible. Also, reach out if you need help. Professors are always willing to lend a hand, and by just reaching out to them, you can get the guidance and help that you may need."
Similarly, Drew Velardo ‘27, MBA ‘28, a third-year finance student in the accelerated dual-degree BS/MBA 3+1 program, highlighted the impact that organization and routine has on his academics.
Verlado emphasizes that taking breaks is just as important as studying.
“I stay organized and break up my studying so I'm not doing everything at the last minute. Going to the gym and getting enough sleep also helps me manage stress and feel more prepared,” he said.
In addition to balancing the accelerated pace of the BS/MBA 3+1 program, Velardo serves as vice president of the Alpha Sigma Phi fraternity and remains active in several business-related organizations.
“It helps to take things one assignment or exam at a time,” he said. “Put in the effort, take care of yourself mentally and physically, and remember that one grade doesn't define your entire semester."
Bernadette Whelen ‘27, DPT ‘30, a health science major in the 3+3 physical therapy program, emphasized the value of consistency throughout the semester to manage her many responsibilities.
“During midterm season, I try to stick to a study schedule,” she said. “I make sure to review the material discussed after each class and study in small increments for each course so I do not burn out.”
As a resident assistant and member of the Quinnipiac cheer team, Whelen balances a heavy schedule by “talking with friends and family or going for a walk.”
She encourages first-year students to do the same and stay on track with a study schedule and comfortable work environment.
While their schedules and academic paths differ, Sawyer, Velardo and Whelen shared advice that follows a common theme: preparation, balance and self-care can make midterm season more manageable.
From utilizing campus spaces to making time for physical activity, each student stresses that midterm season is more than earning good grades.
